Recently, Jr’s received just such a request from a homeowner in Pennsylvania Furnace. Fred McClellan has been the owner/operator at Jr’s for 27 years.
“In this Pennsylvania Furnace farmhouse we wanted to update everything but keep the charm of a country farm house kitchen,” Fred says.
To accomplish the home owner’s goal, Fred and his team of experts got to work, which included re-envisioning the space.
“Some extensive repairs were required. We removed the old built-in cabinets, repurposed use in the laundry and garage,” Fred says. “We installed marble countertops, which brought a lot of warmth to the space, and we removed several layers of flooring to expose the stunning original pine wood floors.”
To keep with the country farm house theme, Jr’s team also updated the ceiling with some bead board, painted a light country blue.
With the charm dialed up by the pine flooring and marble countertops, the team went to work on the modern features.
“We updated all the appliances and lighting in the kitchen,” Fred says. “For ease of use, we moved the sink into the island and added a dishwasher as well.”

When a State College homeowner recently decided to renovate their kitchen, they went to the area’s experts at JRs tile and flooring. Fred McClellan Jr. is the owner at Jr's Quality Tile & Hardwood
“Our client came to us with a vision of a more functional kitchen,” McClellan said. “The current space was cramped and difficult for two to work together in the kitchen.”
When the homeowners first met with the design team at JRs, they were not sure how to create a more functional space. The team at JRs worked with them to clarify their vision.
“After a couple of meetings, a few layout drawings and much talk of how the new space will be used, together we found a place for everything they needed and where they used it most,” McClellan says. “The cabinetry is a Maple with a light stain, soft close, full extension hardware. The counter tops are beautiful granite and the flooring is a high-end laminate.”
To create an open feel, the peninsula and overhead cabinets in the old kitchen were removed. The island is 48” x 72” and holds the mixer station, dishwasher, silverware, cooking sheets and some misc. storage. When JR’s turned the island they created 54” walk space between the outside cabinetry and the island.
According to McClellan, another priority for the State College kitchen clients was increased light in the space.
“To get more natural light and a better view of the deer crossing the back of the property we added a window above the sink and a sliding door in the former dining room,” McClellan says.
A separate work space was created to help keep everyone in the space - whether they were cooking or not.
“We created a work space for the man of the house that would keep him out of the way yet part of the food preparation,” McClellan says.
“The client loves to bake and cook,” McClellan says. “To create the space for everything we used pull-out trays, a pop-up mixer station, plate drawers, multiple silverware drawers, multiple spice wracks that are hidden in the cabinetry, dividers and slide out cutting boards.”
The home’s pets were not forgotten during the renovation.
“We created space for the pets and their needs as well,” Fred says.
A sophisticated lighting design put the finishing touches on this revamped State College kitchen.
“We looked to our expert electrician to come up with a lighting design that would light the space at night. Thru a series of recessed lighting and under-cabinet lighting we are able to provide bright light when needed and low light for those times when some soft lighting is desired.

JR's Quality Tile and Hardwood has done every room in my house with either oak hardwood or ceramic tile and did a great job. They take the time to help you decide what would work best and offer suggestions when needed. Their employees are always thoughtful and careful when working in your home. They have also completed two bathroom remodels and moved a laundry upstairs. I am currently going to be remodeling my kitchen with their assistance. I would recommend them to anyone wanting a quality job done.Anonymous
A GREAT SPACE
We used a rift and quartered white oak un-finished flooring to complete this great room, the floor has a radiant heat system mounted below the floor system. We used the Bona finishing system and products when we sanded the floors. The color chosen is the natural color of the White Oak. When using radiant heated floors, we need to be careful on material selections and installation methods. When you turn the heating system on in the fall, we need to bring the heat up a few degrees each day to keep the flooring from going into a type of shock that could have adverse effects on the overall appearance.
JR's did a complete repair of our water-damaged front room from replacing hardwood floors and sub floors to the walls and areas behind the walls. They did a fantastic job for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend them.
